A good skincare routine is a must for a beautiful, glowing skin. But it is important to know which products to use and which not. We’ve all made mistakes when it comes to using skin products. Nobody’s perfect right? We have listed the most common mistakes so you won’t make them!
1. Sunscreen only in the summer
The most damaging effect of UV-radiation is that it makes your skin age. 90% of skin ageing is caused by the sun. I bet this comes as a surprise right?! Nonetheless, we all enjoy being in the sun. A mistake commonly made is to only apply sunscreen in the summer, when we go to the beach. However, sunrays can also reach us behind glass or when its cloudy outside. It is important to always protect your skin with a sunscreen or a day cream with SPF. Don’t forget your neck and your hands! And say no to a sunbed, sunbeds reduce the quality and quantity of collagen which causes wrinkles.
2. Not removing your make-up
Cleansing your skin is key to maintain beautiful, fresh and healthy looking skin. Cleansing your face only takes a few minutes. Moreover, creams work much better on a cleansed face. Sleeping with make-up on is a real no go! It increases the risk of skin problems such as enlarged pores and acne. If you struggle removing your make-up after a night out, then place cleaning wipes next to your bed, your skin will thank you.
3. Using too aggressive products
Many people, especially those with an oily or impure skin, use aggressive toners or cleansers that have alcohol in them. They clean your skin but at the same time cause a lot of damage as alcohol dries out your skin and causes irritations. Instead its better to use a mild cleanser with nourishing ingredients.
4. Using the same products all year long
In the winter your skin may feel different than it would in the summer. Even hormonal changes and stress can contribute to an altered skin condition. So listen to your skin and change your skincare routine if need be.
5. Scrubbing too often
We all want a smooth and soft skin and even though there is nothing wrong with scrubbing, don’t scrub more than once or twice a week. If you have a sensitive skin then once a week is enough. By scrubbing too often you may damage the skin’s natural barrier which would make your skin look drier and duller. It is also important to use the right products. There are different scrubs out there on the market. The scrubs by Umami are made with glycerine and 100% natural strawberry seeds as scrub particles. This way Umami scrubs undo your skin from dead skin cells in a mild but efficient way.
6. Using skincare products for too long
All skin care products have an expiry date which means that sooner or later they will turn bad. Usually products that are passed their expiry date may lose active ingredients and may even start to irritate your skin. So don’t use any products that have been on the shelf for far too long.
7. A dehydrated skin is not the same as a dry skin.
Even though dry and dehydrated skin seem very similar, they are actually very different from one another. A dry skin lacks sebum while a dehydrated skin lacks moisture. Both types of skin however require a vastly different treatment. More information can be found in our blog: Dry vs Dehydrated skin.
8. No hygiene
Being unhygienic with skin care products or make-up may lead to skin irritations. Therefore, always close your skin care products properly and regularly clean your make-up brushes. It also doesn’t hurt to replace your make-up pouch. Putting on make-up together with your friends is always a pleasant experience, but try not to share your make-up. Bacteria can spread rapidly and may even lead to an infected eye.
9. Lack of patience
Sometimes your skin just needs a little bit of time to get used to certain ingredients, it may take up to 2 months before some products show results. So be patient when using a new skincare routine, patience is key.
10. Natural skincare products
Pure ingredients from natural origins are good for the skin. We all agree about that. But if your skin is sensitive some natural ingredients may start to irritate your skin. So don’t always automatically assume that using biologically skincare products are for the better.
